EAVI – the European Association for Viewers Interests – was established in 2005 as an international non-profit body. It was the first organisation to recognise the importance of media literacy and citizenship at a European level with the goal of enabling citizens to engage competently with media. EAVI has two main objectives for implementing activities across Europe.
- Inform EU policy-making processes. Activities include advocacy, meetings with decision-makers, drafting policy papers, compiling research and speaking at conferences;
- Equip citizens with media literacy skills, facilitating their understanding of how and why the media work. EAVI provides relevant content on its online platforms, designs campaigns, workshops and training, offers resources in different languages, authors books and produces audiovisual content.
EAVI has a strong track record as a civil society organisation with three main strengths:
- A trusted & authoritative voice at the EU level.
- EAVI has been a decisive force in defining the current understanding of media literacy, authoring on behalf of the European Commission, four key EU-wide studies;
- EAVI sits on a number of prestigious international fora such as the CDMSI Steering Committee of the Council of Europe, various European Commission experts groups, MIL Alliance of UNESCO, on the Advisory Board of the European Audiovisual Observatory in Strasbourg.
- A facilitator of engaged dialogue and debate.
EAVI has a privileged position connecting to a wide range of stakeholders and has promoted open debate and dialogue.
- A vehicle to increase awareness and uphold EU values.
